“Man, it’s a good thing we managed to get this vehicle,” Clay said as they drove through the desert. “I can’t imagine how tough it’d be to be hiking through the desert on foot on a day like this.”

“The sky’s getting real black over there,” Diana said. “When that storm breaks, it’s going to be an intense one. Fiercest storm we’ve had in these parts for years, by the look of it.”

Lightning flashed across the dark clouds in the distance, illuminating their bulbous contours in a brief burst of brilliant violet. A low rumble of thunder rolled across the desert plain, and it was loud enough to get Boris whimpering with fright.

“I’ve trained him to be okay with gunshots,” Frank said, gently petting Boris, “but he still doesn’t like thunder.”

“Let’s hope we avoid the worst of the storm,” Clay said. “I’ll sure be grateful for the cooling down it’ll bring, but I hope we don’t get caught in it.”

They drove on. Hours had passed since they had escaped from their pursuers, and they had not seen any signs of any other terrorists, or anyone else at all out here in the middle of the desert. The Humvee’s fuel had dipped down to about a quarter tank, but they would still be able to cover plenty of miles.

“How long before we get close to the border?” Diana asked.

“I’d say we could get there before sunset,” Clay answered. “If we keep going at this pace and don’t stop anywhere.”

“What are we going to do when the fuel runs out?” she asked.

“Continue on foot,” he said. “We’ll be close enough by then, and I’m sure that Frank’s grandkids will be easy enough to find when it’s dark; they should have enough sense to get a fire going, and we’ll able to spot it from miles away.”

“So will Pablo and his gangsters,” Frank muttered. “And I sure as hell hope they don’t see my grandkids’ fire before we do.”

“Whatever happens, Pablo is going to die,” Clay growled, tightening his grip on the steering wheel and clenching his jaw as thoughts of revenge against the man who had murdered his best friend floated around his mind. “Don’t you worry about Pablo, Frank. I’m gonna make sure I take care of that bastard. He won’t be hurting your grandkids or anyone else, not after I deal with him.”

They were driving across a flat section of the desert with a rocky floor. It looked as if this had once been a riverbed, hundreds or perhaps thousands of years ago. Now, however, it was as dry as a bone, scattered with boulders, scrub, and cactuses.

“Looks like the storm is breaking on those hills in the distance,” Frank remarked. “Maybe we won’t get any of it after all.”

The clouds were indeed emptying their issue over the hills in a ferocious deluge. The three of them watched as they drove, but soon turned their attention back to the path they were on, ignoring the raging storm in the distance.

“Frank, check your map,” Clay said.
